Turkish Towels

Handwoven in Denizli, Türkiye, in cotton and linen. Flat-woven rather than looped — which is why a Turkish towel dries in a fraction of the time a terry towel takes, and folds to about a third of the bulk.

Peştemal is their proper name, and the one we use in the shop. Turkish towel is the name most people know them by, so you will find both used here.

Turkish towel or terry: what actually differs

Terry is a pile weave. Loops of yarn stand up from a woven base, and those loops are what hold the water. It is why a terry bath towel feels plush, and it is also why it stays damp — the water sits in the pile rather than moving through the cloth. A full-size terry bath towel typically runs 400–700 GSM and can take most of a day to dry properly in a closed bathroom.

A peshtemal has no loops at all. It is a flat weave: warp and weft, nothing standing up from the surface. Absorbency comes from long-staple cotton wicking along the fibre instead of trapping water in pile. In practice that means it dries in a fraction of the time, packs to roughly a third the volume, and does not pick up the sour smell a damp terry towel develops in a gym bag.

It softens rather than wears out. Terry mats down over time as the loops crush and pull. A flat weave has nothing to crush, which is why an old peshtemal is almost always softer than a new one.

Where terry still wins: standing on. A bath mat wants pile underfoot. Everything else — bath, beach, pool, hammam, travel, hair, guest bathroom — is what the peshtemal was built for.

Our cloth. Ours are woven in Denizli, in the Aegean textile region of Türkiye, from a 50/50 cotton and linen blend. The linen is deliberate: it is stronger wet than dry, and it gives the cloth a faint texture that works as a light scrub rather than sitting flat against the skin.

A note on the name. Peştemal is the Turkish word, taken from Persian, and it is what these have been called in Anatolian hammams for centuries. Turkish towel, hammam towel and fouta all describe the same flat-woven cloth.
