Tote Bags

Silk velvet tote bags, handwoven in Türkiye. Every motif on this page carries a meaning older than the bag it sits on — and every colourway is made once.

A guide to the motifs

Our totes are cut from silk velvet woven in small batches by artisan workshops in Türkiye. Because each bag is cut from a different length of cloth, no two pieces carry the pattern in the same place. These are the families you will find here:

Çintemani — the sultan's leopard. Three dots abstracted from leopard markings, a symbol of strength and authority, embroidered onto Ottoman royal kaftans for centuries. See the Orange Leopard, Teal Leopard and Steel Leopard.

Ikat — dyed before it is woven. The yarn is bound and dyed first, then aligned thread by thread on the loom. The soft feathering where colours meet is the signature of genuine hand ikat. See the Indigo, Olive and Amber Ikat Diamond, and the Meadow Ikat Chevron.

Nazar — the eye that watches back. Anatolian belief holds that the human eye is the strongest guard against the evil gaze. The Nazar Eye tote is a talisman you carry.

Lale — the Ottoman tulip. In Sufi thought the tulip represents the Oneness of God; written in Arabic it shares its letters with the name Allah. Istanbul's historic tiles alone hold over three hundred tulip forms. See the Tulip tote.

Geometry without an end. Lattice, octagon and labyrinth patterns repeat forever because Islamic ornament turned away from figures and towards infinite pattern. See the Olive Moroccan Trellis, Teal Octagon Trellis and Fuchsia Labyrinth.

Zebra. Drawn rather than photographed, which is what keeps it reading as artwork rather than animal print. Our most-requested motif: Midnight, Desert and Moonlight.

Every tote shares: 12" x 11.5" with a 6" handle drop, silk velvet outer, fully lined interior, made by hand in Türkiye. A smaller silhouette is available in selected motifs. When a bolt of velvet runs out, that colourway closes for good.
