Hatai: the endless interlacing branch

Winding vine motifs of this kind are known as hatai, a name that traces back to the city of Hata in Chinese Turkestan. The style is built from stylised leaves, shoots and blossoms tangling into one another without a clear beginning or end. It became one of the most-used forms in all of Turkish ornament, appearing in manuscript illumination, on tiles, and across woven textiles.

Handwoven, never printed

The vine is woven into the pile, which is why the greens deepen when the light moves across them. Each bag is cut from its own section of cloth, so the vine travels differently on every piece.
