A motif with a very long passport

The curved teardrop we call paisley moved west along the same trade routes as silk itself, picking up a new name in every language it passed through. Turkish weavers absorbed it the way they absorbed so much else, folding it into a decorative tradition that was already borrowing from Central Asia, Persia and China. That habit of absorbing and reworking is arguably the defining trait of Turkish ornament.

Handwoven, never printed

The cream is woven into a black velvet ground, which is why the motif seems to float above the surface rather than sit on it. Every bag is cut from its own section of the bolt, so the teardrops fall in a placement unique to your piece.
