Cream lace medallions on walnut linen, 18x18

A field of small crocheted medallions, each one worked separately and joined to its neighbours by hand, covering almost the whole face of the cover. Cream cotton lace against a walnut linen ground, so the openwork reads as light against dark rather than the other way round.

Joined, not cut

The panel is not one piece of lace with holes in it. Every medallion is finished on its own and then linked to the ones around it, which is why the grid wavers slightly and why no two panels come out the same size. That is the difference between hand crochet and machine lace, where the repeat is exact.

Styling it

The densest of the three lace covers, and the one that reads as texture rather than as a motif. It works where a patterned cushion would be too much — on a plain sofa, or paired with the rosette lace cover so the two scales play off each other.
