Slate-blue carnation rosettes with small red centres, hand-embroidered in an even repeat across an ivory ground, in a 16" × 24" lumbar. Fresh and tidy where the darker covers are rich.

The carnation motif

The carnation is a favourite of Ottoman-influenced embroidery, usually drawn as a fanned rosette. Set in a regular repeat on ivory, it reads almost like a printed fabric from a distance — until you get close and see the stitches.

Styling it

Ivory and blue is close to a neutral, and the lightest of the lumbars to place. It works on white bedding, a linen sofa or a pale bench without fighting anything around it.
