Suzani Fish Pillow Cover | 20x20

A suzani fish pillow cover, hand-embroidered on tan

A single fish, its body filled with flowers and outlined in chain stitch, worked in orange, red, teal and yellow on a plain tan ground. A figurative cover in a collection mostly given over to flowers — and all the more charming for it.

The fish motif

The fish is a symbol of luck, abundance and protection across Anatolian folk craft. Rendering it in suzani technique means every scale and fin is a separate passage of embroidery, which is why the whole animal reads as a little mosaic of colour.

Styling it

The tan ground keeps a bright, busy motif grounded, so this works in a room that is otherwise calm. A good one for a child’s room, a reading chair, or anywhere a bit of wit is welcome.
