Şemse: the motif named after the sun

The medallion form is called şemse, from the Arabic şems, meaning sun. It earned the name because the radiating shape genuinely resembles one. You will find it at the centre of illuminated manuscripts, on İznik tiles, and stamped into the leather of book bindings, always as the point everything else arranges itself around.

Handwoven, never printed

The medallion is woven into the velvet, which is why its edges glow rather than sit flat. Each bag is cut from a different part of the bolt, so the medallion lands in its own position on every piece.
