The star within the octagon

Eight-pointed geometry runs through Anatolian craft from carpet borders to mosque ceilings. In Turkish weaving the star, yıldız, stands for a person's destiny, for fertility, and above all for light. Set inside an octagonal lattice, it becomes a repeating field with no obvious start or finish, which is exactly the point: Islamic ornament turned away from figures and towards pattern that could continue forever.

Handwoven, never printed

The lattice is woven into the velvet, so its lines sit slightly proud of the ground and catch light along the edges. Every bag is cut from a different part of the bolt, giving each piece its own crop of the geometry.
