The flower the Ottomans loved more than the rose
Cream silk velvet with pink and green tulips. Restrained, feminine, and carrying more meaning than almost any other motif in Turkish art.
Lale: a flower that spells a name
The tulip, lale in Turkish, is not simply a flower in Ottoman design. In Sufi thought it represents the Oneness of God: written in Arabic script, lale uses the same three letters as the name Allah. That is why the tulip appears on mosque tiles, on tombstones, on imperial edicts. Istanbul's historic buildings alone hold over three hundred distinct tulip forms in their wall tiles, and more than five hundred have been counted in textiles.
Handwoven, never printed
Each tulip is woven into the pile of the silk velvet. The pink lifts and dims as you move, which is something no printed fabric does. Every bag is cut from a different section of cloth, so your tulips fall in their own arrangement.
