What holds this turquoise kaftan shut is the detail worth looking at: a row of corded clasps, painted in deep red against the pale ground. One of twelve Ottoman kaftan wall pieces in our collection.

The clasp detail

Ottoman tailors fastened court robes with braided cord looped over a stitched button — no metal anywhere on the garment. On a real caftan the clasps ran the whole front and were often the only ornament a plain robe carried. Painting them onto ceramic keeps a piece of tailoring that no longer exists.

Made by hand in Turkey

Shaped and painted individually in Turkey, with underglaze colour and gold gilding applied over the top. The kaftan form itself follows the ceremonial robes worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries.
