Navy across the shoulders, red below, and between them a lattice of gilded ogees. This is the most formal of our twelve Ottoman kaftan wall pieces — the closest to what a court robe actually looked like.

The ogee motif

The ogee is a double-curved arch, and Ottoman weavers used it as a frame: a repeating series of them, each holding a single large flower or medallion. On sixteenth-century silks it was woven in metal thread. Here it is drawn in gold by hand, one curve at a time.

Made by hand in Turkey

Each piece is shaped and painted individually. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp. The two-colour body means more brushwork than most — and more variation between pieces.
