The carnation motif
Ottoman painters drew the flower this way on purpose — flattened, symmetrical, seen from an angle no real carnation offers. Court workshops were after the pattern, not the likeness, and a flower opened flat gave them more surface to gild.
Made by hand in Turkey
Each piece is shaped and painted individually in Turkey. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp. The form follows the ceremonial caftans worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries.
