The saz leaf motif

The saz yolu style entered the Ottoman court in the sixteenth century and became the signature of its painters — a leaf too large and too wild to belong to any real plant, bending back on itself as though caught in wind. It was the closest Ottoman art came to drawing pure movement.

Made by hand in Turkey

The kaftan form follows the ceremonial robes worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp. A single long stroke like this leaves nowhere to hide a mistake.
