The fish-scale motif

Ottoman craftsmen called this pul — the fish-scale pattern — and reached for it whenever they wanted to suggest water, abundance and increase. It is one of the oldest patterns in the repertoire and one of the most laborious, because every scale has to be drawn individually and still line up with the one beneath it.

Made by hand in Turkey

The kaftan form is drawn from the ceremonial robes worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp.
