The star motif

Ottoman painters used the star as a mark of guidance and good fortune, and they liked it best when it looked strewn rather than arranged. The irregularity is deliberate: a grid would have read as decoration, while a scatter reads as night sky.

Made by hand in Turkey

The form follows the ceremonial caftans worn at the Ottoman court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp. Each star is placed by hand, so no two pieces scatter the same way.
