The meander: a line with no end

The stepped key or labyrinth is among the oldest borders in Anatolian weaving, closely related to the su yolu or waterway motif. Both stand for continuity: water that keeps moving, life that keeps going. A line with no beginning and no end suited Islamic ornament perfectly, where infinite pattern took the place of figurative imagery.

Handwoven, never printed

The motif is woven into the velvet pile rather than printed on the surface, which is why the green shifts between olive and forest as you move. Every bag is cut from its own section of cloth.
