The carnation motif

The carnation stood for paradise in Ottoman decoration — the flower of the garden you are promised. It appears on tiles, prayer rugs and tombstones as often as on robes. Left on its own against an empty ground, it carries more weight than it would in a crowd of pattern.

Made by hand in Turkey

Shaped and painted individually in Turkey, with underglaze colour and gold gilding over the top. The silhouette follows the ceremonial caftans worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries.
