The pearl border

Pearl trim is the oldest kind of luxury in Ottoman dress. It says nothing about pattern and everything about rank — sumptuary rules governed who could wear it, and a robe edged in pearls announced its owner before he spoke. On ceramic the effect survives as a line of small white domes catching light along the edge.

Made by hand in Turkey

Shaped and painted individually in Turkey, following the ceremonial caftans worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp.
