A spray of tulips climbs the front of this saffron-yellow kaftan, every bloom outlined in gold. It is one of twelve Ottoman kaftan wall pieces we carry, and the only one in this colourway.

The tulip motif

The tulip was the Ottoman court's own flower. In Arabic script its letters share the spelling of Allah, which is why it turns up on everything from İznik palace tiles to a sultan's ceremonial robe. Here it climbs the body in a single spray rather than a repeating pattern — the way court painters drew it when the flower itself was the subject.

Made by hand in Turkey

The silhouette comes from the ceremonial caftans worn at court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Colour goes on beneath the glaze, gold gilding over it, so the surface stays glossy and the line stays sharp. Because every one is painted individually, no two are identical.
