The hatayi rosette

This is the hatayi — a bloom drawn in cross-section rather than from the outside, so you see its interior as a diagram. It travelled into Ottoman art along the road from Central Asia and stayed for five hundred years, standing for the cycle that keeps returning. It is the one motif in the repertoire that belongs to no particular flower.

Made by hand in Turkey

The form follows the ceremonial caftans worn at the Ottoman court in the 17th and 18th centuries. Each piece is shaped and painted individually, with underglaze colour and gold gilding over the top.
