Why the lattice never ends

Interlacing lattice work is one of the great achievements of Islamic design. When figurative image was set aside, ornament went the other way entirely, into geometry that could repeat forever without a centre or an edge. This trellis has no starting point and no place it resolves. That is deliberate, and it is why the eye keeps travelling across it.

Handwoven, never printed

The lattice is woven into the velvet pile, so the olive deepens in the hollows and lifts along the lines. Every bag is cut from a different length of cloth, so the trellis crops differently on each piece.
