An animal print with an edge, not a roar

Steel blue silk velvet with orange leopard markings. The cool base takes the heat out of the print, so it works with tailoring as easily as with denim.

Çintemani: three dots, borrowed from the leopard

Çintemani takes the leopard's markings and reduces them to three dots. Across Anatolian craft it reads as strength, might and authority, and it was worn for protection. Ottoman sultans used it heavily on their kaftans and court dress. The motif originates in the Far East and travelled west with the silk trade.

Handwoven, never printed

The motif is built into the weave. That is what gives silk velvet its shifting sheen, and it is why the orange looks like it is lit from underneath. Every bag is cut from a different length of cloth, so the pattern placement is unique to your piece.
